What is a data center?

Data centers are spaces dedicated to storing and processing digital data and, as such, are a fundamental element for the operation of the internet, but also of many applications and companies.

In itself, the concept of " data center " is simple; It is a physical site where the computer equipment is grouped in storage cabinets to form an information system.

The emergence of data center technician in recent years has played a key role in the growth of cloud computing , or cloud computing , as they have made it possible to keep information "remotely" instead of having local copies.

Today, many multinationals such as Facebook and Google have their own data centers distributed worldwide, while many SMEs use the infrastructure of a specialized provider to store their applications and websites and minimize costs.


The components of a data center

As we mentioned, data centers are physical spaces, which can be a room within a building or a complex, consisting of computer hardware that must be accessible from any corner of the planet, in other words, by servers.

To ensure optimal availability, these centers generally use several internet providers using fiber optics. In addition, they protect connections internally by creating virtual networks and externally by installing firewalls (firewalls in Spanish).

On the other hand, the servers present in a data center are varied to have the capacity to respond to diverse needs, which can go from the installation of different operating systems to the hosting and processing of databases, as well as the storage of large volumes of data or application execution.

Servers, and more generally, hardware, are stored in network cabinets, also called racks or storage compartments. Servers, routers and other network switches are shaped like drawers so that they can easily be inserted into cabinets. The standard width of a cabinet is 19 inches (48.28 centimeters) and the height of the "drawers" is defined with the unit U (1 U equals 4.5 centimeters). In this way, each element occupies one or more U in the compartment. This division by modules facilitates maintenance operations.
